This workshop is designed to introduce the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model to clinical therapists. It will offer an experiential overview of the core concepts of IFS for those seeking guidance on utilizing an IFS-informed practice with a wide range of clinical presentations. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the IFS paradigm as well as concrete tools to practice with clients.  

Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand of the basic principles of the IFS Model

  2. Identify the different parts of the internal system and begin to identify parts of their own internal system

  3. Identify the 8 Cs

  4. Understand the beginning steps of an IFS session

  5. Practice getting to know the protective system through the 6Fs.

Susan Millham, MSW, LICSW: Certified Internal Family Systems Therapist: 
Susan Millham is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in WV and is licensed to practice in PA, MD and VA as well. She earned her Master of Social Work at Binghamton University in Upstate New York. Additionally, she was awarded a Certificate in Geriatric and Gerontological Social Work from Binghamton University.  Susan  served as a Fellow with the Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education (HPPAE), and provided individual, home-based psychotherapy to geriatric clients and families. Her research findings were peer-reviewed and published.  In addition to her private practice, she currently teaches social work and gerontology classes as an Adjunct Lecturer with West Virginia University.  

Susan’s commitment to IFS is reflected in her dedicated training path through the IFS Institute.  She has served as Program Assistant for the IFS Institute in a couple Level 1 trainings.  Additionally, she is currently working towards the requirements to become an Approved Clinical Consultant with the IFS Institute. Most recently, in partnership with Holly Thomas, Susan, co-founded The Self-led Collective of Appalachia with a goal to increase the accessibility of the IFS model and support the mental health professionals who live and work in Appalachia. 

 

Holly Thomas, MSW, LICSW, AADC, MAC, Certified IFS Therapist

Holly is the lead clinician and owner of Thomas Integrative Psychotherapy. She is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) and an Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (AADC) in West Virginia. Additionally, she holds licenses to practice clinical social work in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, and Washington. Holly is also nationally credentialed as a Master Addiction Counselor (MAC). She received her Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) in 2005 and her Master of Social Work (MSW) in 2007 from West Virginia University. In 2023, Holly completed level three Internal Family Systems (IFS) training through the IFS Institute and completed credentialing in 2025. Most recently, in partnership with Susan Millham, Holly co-founded The Self-led Collective of Appalachia with a goal to increase the accessibility of the IFS model and support the mental health professionals who live and work in Appalachia.
